Welcome to The Clifton House, a serene artist residency, workshop, and event space located in the former home of acclaimed poet and children's book author, Lucille Clifton, and her artist-activist husband, Fred Clifton. Nestled in a quiet, leafy suburban neighborhood, this beautifully preserved and thoughtfully updated residence offers a peaceful retreat for creatives and administrators of all kinds seeking time and space for their work or a location for their next meeting.
The historic home retains much of its original character: sun drenched rooms, French doors, hardwood floors, and the very spaces where Lucille Clifton crafted Good Times, her 1969 award-winning first book of poetry while offering modern amenities tailored to the needs of today's working artists and creatives.
If you're looking for an intimate space to create your next artistic project, host a book talk or teach a workshop, consider The Clifton House.
Creative Work Space
The Clifton House offers three fully furnished creative work spaces; private rooms, available for 1 to 7 day stays. Each room includes a desk/workspace, high-speed Wi-Fi, fresh linens, and access to communal living and kitchen areas.
1. The Clifton Suite
A spacious, light-filled primary suite with a queen-sized bed, a private en suite bathroom, and a seating area over looking the garden. Ideal for residents seeking extra privacy and comfort.
2. The Horizon Room
A cozy, bright room with a twin trundle bed and desk facing a large window that looks out on the landscaped yard. Shares a reading area and full bath.
3. The Solitude Room
A tranquil room featuring a twin trundle bed perfect for artists who thrive in simplicity and light. Shares a reading area and full bath.
Event Spaces
The Clifton House offers an ideal environment for non-profit or corporate events such as meetings, trainings, workshops, networking events and more.
Available for half or full-day events.
There are three (3) floors available:
1. First Floor
This floor provides access to open meeting spaces and kitchen access.
2. Second Floor
This floor includes exhibition space, greenroom, the main residency suite and an intimate patio.
3. Third Floor
This floor includes two residency rooms and a reading nook.
